The Guilds´ Fountain
back to overview
The Guilds’ Fountain was created in 1983 by Bonifatius Stirnberg. Its twelve niches represent the eponymous trades of Reutlingen’s twelve former guilds. In contrast to other free imperial cities, Reutlingen was not governed by patrician families but by councilmen elected by the city’s craftsmen. In the 14th century the emperor accorded Reutlingen a democratic charter under governance of the guilds; this charter was to remain in force until the year 1802.
