Friedrich List Memorial

back to overview

You are standing in front of a memorial to Reutlingen’s most important son: Friedrich List, an early proponent of a united Europe. Friedrich List was born in Reutlingen on August 6th, 1789 as the son of a tanner. After serving an initial apprenticeship as a tanner, he entered the civil service of the recently created Kingdom of Württemberg. His talent was apparent and in 1817 King Wilhelm I appointed Friedrich List Professor of Political Economy at the University of Tübingen, despite the fact that List did not even have a doctorate.
